The North Gwent Cardiac Rehabilitation and Aftercare Charity (NGCRAC) was founded over 25 years ago by Dr. Jacky Miles (MBE), lead nurse for heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation research.
Our mission is to provide support, education and rehabilitation to those within the local Monmouthshire and Blaenau Gwent communities who have suffered with their heart health. Charity supported community exercise classes provide ongoing support and encouragement to restore and rebuild health and well-being. Can you imagine suffering a heart attack or being told you have heart failure and receiving no support? The isolation and worry of living with the aftermath of a cardiac event can be frightening. This is why the work the charity does to help healing hearts with their long-term recovery is so important; it can give people the confidence and reassurance to live their lives.
In 2013 we partnered with the Abergavenny Festival of Cycling becoming their official event charity - the festival is a staple event in both Welsh cycling and the local community. In 1991 festival organiser Bill Owen suffered a heart attack and was one of the first patients to undertake the charities rehabilitation programme.
“This charity was a great help to me personally after my heart attack and I am very pleased we can help them in our way” - Bill Owen, Abergavenny Chronicle 2013
This year the cycling event is being held on Saturday June 23rd and there will be activities happening in and around Abergavenny all weekend. If you want to race you can find out more and sign up here.
If you don’t want to get ‘on yer bike’ but still want to join in with the festivities, you can head over to Bailey Park for an action-packed family day out.
With free sports, family friendly activities and stalls you can expect a fun-filled day that you won’t forget. Just make sure you pop over to our stall to say Hello! We’ll have lots of things for children and adults alike to enjoy. We are always on the lookout for fun and exciting fundraising ideas so please get in touch if you’d like to support or volunteer with us. Visit our Facebook page or call Zara Lavender on 01873 732510.
